Geeking Out Monday

Geeking Out Monday - Boku No Hero Academia

Welcome to Geeking Out Monday, a brand new segment where I write about what I’m most excited about right now! Monday can be a huge drag so let’s take a bit of time at the start of the week to think about the things we love!

This week I’m geeking out about Boku No Hero Academia!

So, something to know about me is that I used to really like anime. Not that I don’t like anime now, but in high school I was crazy obsessed with anime. The thing that really grabbed me about Boku No Hero Academia is that this anime gives me the same feelings I had for anime in high school.

I can be a bit of an art snob when it comes to anime, so when I saw the art style for this show a year or so ago, I wasn’t impressed. As any anime fan knows, the genre is very trope-filled, so as I got older I’d started skipping anime unless I loved the art. But I had multiple friends talking about this show so I decided to give it a shot.

This anime is so good in the way any shonen is so good; it takes itself so seriously, but the characters are so endearing that you can’t help but get caught up in it. The anime also makes fun of itself a little bit, which is something I always love in any type of media.

Plus then you meet Todoroki, and he is pretty much every anime boy trope I love rolled into one thing. He’s cool and stoic, but secretly emotionally vulnerable. He has family issues (my favorite) and softens up, just slightly, around certain people. He is a perfect angel and I love him.

I was actually a bit worried about this anime when I heard the premise; in a world of superpowers where most everyone has a quirk, our main character is quirkless. It reminded me a bit of FanFact where Liam is without a magical specialty. Thankfully Boku No Hero Academia is very different from FanFact.

So if you’re looking for a new fandom, I’d highly recommend you check out this anime. It’s on Crunchyroll so it’s free to watch. There’s currently 38 episodes out with a new season airing in April.

If you enjoy:

  • Gratuitous battle scenes

  • Lots of shipping opportunities

  • Action/Adventure/Comedy

  • Liking popular things

  • Anime that (so far) follows the manga

  • Classic shonen (Dragonball Z, Naruto, Bleach) without the filler

  • Superheros

  • Surprisingly touching moments

Then you’ll love this show. And there’s some great fanfiction out there. Also my wife and I are starting to work on fanfiction so you know there will be some good stuff out there!

I’ll probably be really into this series for at least a few months, but I won’t write about it here every week, don’t worry!

If you’re into this show/manga please let’s talk about it. I’m a new fan so I have lots of feelings.
